This tour offers the chance to visit two contrasting wineries: the renowned Gerovassiliou Estate and a charming family-run winery just outside Thessaloniki. These two distinctly different places beautifully complement each other, providing a fuller picture of modern winemaking in Greece. You can explore the details and program for Gerovassiliou Estate visit here.
The second stop is a small winery owned by Maria and Athanasios, where every visitor is treated like family — a true expression of Greek hospitality. Founded in 2008, the winery may be young, but it is fully equipped and produces high-quality wines. This comes as no surprise, as winemaking is not just a profession for this couple — it's a lifelong passion. Athanasios, a fourth-generation winemaker, produced his first wine at just 15 years old, beginning his personal journey in this challenging field.
The tour begins with a guided walk through the winery, during which Maria and Athanasios explain each step of the winemaking process and answer any questions. Then comes the most exciting part – the tasting session.
Guests can sample both international and indigenous grape varieties, including AssyrtikoㅤOne of the standout offerings is retsina— a traditional Greek wine infused with pine resin. For those who enjoy stronger spirits, Athanasios’s oak-aged Tsipouro (a grape pomace brandy) is a must-try.
Upon request and by prior arrangement, guests can also take part in a cooking class at the winery Learn how to prepare dolmadakia (stuffed grape leaves) or a classic Greek pita (traditional pie). Maria will gladly share the secrets of these traditional dishes! Everyone is invited to roll up their sleeves, cook, and — best of all — taste the delicious results together!
