    About Naoussa<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Thanks to its rich natural surroundings, Naoussa has enjoyed prosperity for centuries. Up until the mid-20th century, it was one of the Balkans\u2019 major textile centers \u2014 a booming industry powered by the mountain river that runs through town. Many of the historic factory buildings still stand today, offering a glimpse into that golden era. <\/span><\/p>\n

    Naoussa has also been known for its agricultural products \u2014 especially peaches, cherries, and grapes. Winemaking here dates back generations. The region received official designation as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) zone in 1971, and in 1987, the International Organisation of Vine and Wine named Naoussa the \u201cCity of Wine.\u201d\nToday, over 20 wineries operate in the area, producing wines primarily from Xinomavro, whose name means \u201cacid-black.\u201d This demanding but rewarding grape variety known for its complex personality as the diva of Greek vineyards. When handled with care, it produces elegant, complex wines with aromas of red berries (think strawberries and cherries), sun-dried tomatoes, olives, and truffle. <\/span><\/p>\n

    Naoussa is also home to a famous annual celebration \u2014 the \"Janitsaries and Boules\" (\u0393\u03b5\u03bd\u03af\u03c4\u03c3\u03b1\u03c1\u03bf\u03b9 \u03ba\u03b1\u03b9 \u039c\u03c0\u03bf\u03cd\u03bb\u03b5\u03c2)<\/b> carnival. During this traditional event, young men wear historic local costumes and expressive ceremonial masks in a unique, centuries-old parade.
